Artist Of The Week: Joe Semple
We introduce to you our first Artist Of The Week within the genre of Neo Classical! A quickly growing genre that mixes elements from classical music with pop music. Compositions often include felt piano, strings with loops and sound elements from ambient/electronic and atmospheric pop genres.
Leeds-based composer, Joe Semple has been making music in one way or another for most of his life, but for several years now has focused mainly on creating for solo piano. He is mainly inspired by the romantic and the ‘impressionist’ composers, and writes tonal, melodic pieces after their fashion.
Listen to Joe’s debut album ‘Miklagard’ here:
Joe also enjoys some of the more minimalist, ‘pop’ style examples of romantic solo piano music that have become popular over the last few years, such as that done by Joep Beving, as well as cinematic music such as that of Philip Glass. His music draws on influences from these styles, as well as from 19th and early 20th century composers. In the future he plans to write music involving several instruments, specifically strings, as well as writing more for solo piano.
For people who are new to this genre and want to ease your way in – it’s ideal as a background to studying, reading, doing yoga, coding and even for sleeping. Of course we would recommend taking some quality time to listen to the album as a whole via a good quality hi-fi or high-end headphones, as this will reveal all the little mechanical details in the piano that you wouldn’t necessarily otherwise pick up on. ‘Miklagard’ is a collection of beautifully composed pieces of art that will calm your mind and help you focus on whatever task you’re working on.
