Artist Of The Week: Fly Yeti Fly

Our 2nd Artist Of The Week of 2022 is Fly Yeti Fly! They are the Wiltshire-based acoustic duo Lorna Sommerville and Darren Fisher. Blending sensitive vocal harmonies with intricate guitar arrangements, mandolin and harmonica, the duo weave songs and stories from their travels together, with a sound that is reminiscent of the late-’60s folk scene.

Recorded on their houseboat studio on the Kennet and Avon Canal, Fly Yeti Fly have crafted a collection of songs inspired by connection, community and the natural world. The album features intricate acoustic guitar melodies and string arrangements, creating a warm foundation for Darren and Lorna’s vocal harmonies to shine. The album features a full band line-up: guitar, mandolin and vocal arrangements by Darren and Lorna are accompanied by double bass (Alex Pearson), cello (Jo Hooper), violin (Annie Baylis) and flute (Catherine Hurley).

Recording the album in their tiny studio came with its own unique set of challenges, with the pair routinely having to stop for all manner of unusual, sometimes infuriating, phenomena – high winds, heavy rain, chugging boat engines, quacking ducks, interrupting swans, you get the idea!

What a beautiful track with such a nostalgic feel to it. We would not be surprised to hear this track in an Oscar-winning feel-good film based on a true story. The duo’s raw yet refined vocals dance intimately on rich, organic and rustic sounding instrumentation. Utter beauty.
